Our History

1873	Mt. Jezreel born out of Vermont Avenue Baptist Church by a group of people tired of walking across town to church. The pastor was Rev. Temple S. Robinson
1879	Mt. Jezreel relocated to 7th near L Street, S.E. to site known as the old "Meat House."
1882	Church voted to purchase the lot on the southeast corner of E Street at 5th, S.E.
1883	Cornerstone laid at 5th & E Streets, S.E.
1888	Church dedicated with a property value of approximately $20,000
1894	Rev. Philip Steward called to pastor and served for 17 years
1911	Rev. Randolph Peyton called to pastor and served for just over a year
1914	Rev. Joseph P. Green called to pastor and served for 9 years
1925	Rev. Luther T. Hughes called to pastor and served for 39 years
1928	Church secured a loan for remodeling
1941	Mortgage burned
1955-1957	Purchased property adjacent to 5th Street edifice
1961	Ground breaking for Christian Education Building
1962	Rev. Hughes presented with keys to Christian Education Building
1965	Dr. Harold E. Trammell called to pastor. Organized and reorganized auxiliaries to better address the work of the church and church work
1982	Church temporarily relocated to Faith Baptist Church
1984	Church relocated to 405 Riggs Road, N.E.
1986	Mt. Jezreel Federal Credit Union established
1987	Church integrated with community through Kiwanis Club Charter
1992-1993	Valley Green Evangelistic Tent Ministry held
1993	Inception of Kiddie College
1994	Pastor’s Proclamation: "Year of Victorious Living"
1995	Inception of the Koinoina Bible Institute
1996	Church relocated to 420 University Boulevard East, in Silver Spring, Maryland Church Newsletter established: "The Mt. Jezreel Informer" Inception of Communications Ministry
1997	First Church-wide Conference held Christian Education Department established and Director hired Pastor’s vision for bookstore, tape room and café realized Mt. Jezreel’s website established, www.mtjezreel.com Inception of Youth Dance Ministry
1998	Pastor’s Proclamation: "Year of Prosperity" Camp Hope (Vacation Bible School) brought into existence for youth Fully equipped snack area with vending machines installed Inception of Adult Dance Ministry
1999	Pastor’s Proclamation: "Year of the Family" Mt. Jezreel celebrates 125th Anniversary Inception of Prison Ministry
2000	Pastor's Proclamation: "The Year of Living Victoriously" and celebrates our diversity Pastor and Mrs. Trammell celebrates their 50th Wedding Anniversary
2001	Pastor's Proclamation: "The Year of God's New Thing" Mt. Jezreel celebrates 127th Anniversary and honors our "Christian Educators"
2002	Pastor's Proclamation: "The Year of Miracles" Pastor Harold E. Trammell retired September 30, 2002 (serving as pastor for 37 years) and now is Pastor Emeritus Rev. Eldridge Spearman is Pastor-Elect October 1, 2002 The Education Building renamed the "Harold E. Trammell Educational Building" in honor of Rev. Harold E. Trammell with the Cafe renamed as "Neese's Place" in honor of First Lady Denise Trammell Inception of Evangelism Ministry
2003	Pastor's Proclamation: "The Year of 'Church Alive!' and Miracles II" 1st Annual Church Alive! Ministry Leadership Conference Mount Jezreel Celebrating 130th Anniversary 1st Anniversary of Rev.
