Building Mature Disciples for the Kingdom

Jobless By Choice Retirees (JBC) Ministry

The Retirees Ministry, Jobless By Choice-Retirees (JBC), is a fellowship ministry whose mission is to reach out, connect, and serve a growing retirement segment within the MJBC congregation and surrounding communities.

The ministry provides opportunities for spiritual growth and discipleship by offering programs and activities that refresh our joy in Christ (Phil. 1:19-26); our joy in service (2:5-11); and our joy in fellowship (2:19-30).

The JBC Ministry embraces weekly Bible Study at 12 noon on Wednesdays; sponsors periodic day trips; attends area-wide interfaith leadership seminars; participates in quarterly DC Baptist Convention convocations for older adults; leads worship service on annual Seasoned Saints Day; and serves as volunteers in several outreach programs, including National Center for Children & Family (NCCF), Carroll Manor Nursing Home, Daughter for the Day, Inc., and the Holy Cross Faith Community Nurse Program.

Membership is open to all retirees, “working retirees” and friends at MJBC.

The JBC ministry embraces ten indicators of spiritual growth and maturity in Christ, in relationship with one another and to each other.  They are as follows:

Find a refuge in prayer  -  Go boldly, go often---go just as you are.  (Hebrews 4:16)

Ask God questions He answers  God promises to reveal Himself when we diligently seek Him.  (Jeremiah 29:13)

Be sensitive to your personal need  Commit to healthy eating sleeping and exercising habits.  (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)

Stay connected  It’s easy to isolate yourself.  Instead reach out to others.  (1 Corinthians 12:26)

Keep laughing  Look for the humor in everyday situations.  (Proverbs 15:13)

Be wise  Align your expectations with reality.  (Proverbs 2:2-5)

Conserve your energy  Listen for God’s heartbeat in the midst of your circumstances, instead of resisting change.  (Ecclesiastes 3)

Be grateful  Give thanks to God for His many blessings each day.  (Colossians 3:15)

Follow an example  Seek out godly people who have gained wisdom from this same transition.  (Proverbs 24:6)

Return to Scripture  Don’t be afraid.  (Isaiah 43:1-3), He has prepared your path.  (Ephesians 2:10), Nothing will separate you from His love. (Romans 8:38-39)
